High Spcecl Computing , LANs , and WANS

چکیده
Optical fiber networks may one day offer potential capacities exceeding 10 terabits/sec. This paper describes present gigabit network techniques for distributed computing as illustrated by the CASA,gigabit testbed, and then explores future all-optic network architectures that offers increased capacity, more optimized level of service for a given application, high fault tolerance, and dynamic recxmfigurability.

87-01-45.1 Control of Wide Area Networks
Local area networks (LANs) have become commonplace in most medium and large companies. Now, wide area networks (WANs) have become the next communications frontier. However, WANs are much more complicated than LANs. In most WAN environments, the more devices an individual has to manage, the more time-consuming is the process of monitoring those devices. Complexity also increases very rapidly due...
متن کاملTowards Integrating Wireless LANs with Wireless WANs using Mobile-IP
To allow a seamless integration between wireless LANs and Wireless WANs, we developed a full stack adaptation model and a simple subnet architecture that superimposes Mobile-IP on cellular-type wireless LANs. The idea is to use Mobile IP as an integrative layer atop different LAN/WAN networks. While Mobile-IP is widely used in wireless WANs, it is not known how well it performs under a wireless...
متن کاملMoving towards ATM: LAN/WAN evolution and experimentation at the University of Oregon
Between April of 1994 and March of 1995 the University of Oregon worked with U S WEST and a number of other participants in an extensive technical trial of ATM equipment and services. This paper shares experiences and lessons learned during that trial. A primary area of emphasis during the trial was a complex mixture of ATM LAN and WAN capabilities. ATM connectivity was extended to high-end des...
متن کاملTransparent En-Route Caching in WANs?
Hierarchical caching is being widely used today to improve web performance. The way hierarchical caches are deployed requires clients and caches to be aware of the location of nearby caches. This creates management and connguration issues, and may also lead to performance bottlenecks. In contrast, Transparent en-route caches (TERC) are devices that are placed at appropriate locations within the...
متن کاملIssues in Wireless Mobile Computing
Workstation-class computers have lately become small enough to carry, and portable computers have become by far the fastest growing segment of the computer industry. In addition, there is much activity in 1 the telecommunications industry aimed at providing wireless data networks which would lie at the fringes of a universal infrastructure of high speed WANs and LANs, providing the ‘‘last link’...
